No, Florida's portability rule lets you transfer up to $500,000 of your accumulated Save Our Homes assessment difference to a new homesteaded property anywhere in the state. You must establish the new homestead by January 1 of the third year after leaving the old one, and the transfer works whether the new home costs more or less than the old one. A proposal to remove the $500,000 cap entirely did not pass in the 2026 legislative session, so the cap remains in place. This makes moving within Florida, for example from a mainland home into a waterfront property, far less costly from a tax standpoint than most people assume.
